The Somerville Youth Hockey Association is proud to offer our Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey programs led by our Instructional Program Director Coach Mark Wallace.
The Learn to Skate Program* – (Saturday mornings 8:00am – 9:15am) this program will teach your child body positioning for balance as well as covering the basics of skating, striding, stopping, turning and crossovers. Basic skating drills, relays, and games will keep the children interested and practicing what is taught in the lessons. (*Required equipment – hockey skates, elbow and knee pads, we also recommend a white hockey helmet w/ cage. No bike helmets).
The Learn to Play Hockey Program** – (Saturday morning 9:30am – 11am) this program will introduce the beginner player to ice hockey and gives them their first exposure to the game. The program enables children to have fun while learning the basics of the great game of ice hockey. Emphasis is placed on strengthening and further developing skating skills, fine tuning technique and developing endurance. Your child will be introduced to passing, receiving, shooting, some basic positioning, and developing their knowledge of the rules and theory of game play. Through drills, scrimmage games, relay races, and some obstacle course challenges, the children will develop and improve from week to week.
Please note: the rink will be divided as half the ice is dedicated to the girls registered for this program. (**Required equipment – hockey skates, elbow and knee pads, chest protector, shin guards, recommend white hockey helmet w/cage, hockey gloves, hockey pants, hockey socks, hockey protector cup)

The goal of SYHA is to give every child proficiency of skill on the ice and to foster good sportsmanship, build character and good citizenship in all our players. SYHA is focused on providing its new players an enjoyable learning experience so they develop the skills and interest to continue to play the sport.
All of the SYHA coaches are volunteers. They range from fathers/mothers with a child(ren) on a team to individuals who simply love the sport and want to teach children.
The program’s success depends on the quality of its coaching and SYHA has been extremely lucky to have had an excellent coaching staff over the years. There is a great deal of talent to draw upon in our community and those interested in coaching should make their interest known by contacting me directly.
Please note that all coaches are patched and trained as per the guideline of USA Hockey.
As your Parent Representative and Coach and on behalf of SYHA I want to extend a warm welcome to you and your family. I’m sure you and your child(ren) will have a wonderful experience!
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
See you soon!
